New Brevet

One may as well ask “Why is New Brevet?”

New Brevet is the private imprint of author David Kurtz. Currently, books are available print-on-demand at Amazon (also Kindle version). In the spring of 1988, David Kurtz wrote what he felt was a wickedly funny short story that was a satire on current culture entitled something bombastic like “Brevet’s New Policy of Isolationism”. The protagonist was aptly named Brevet after a burst of inspiration when Kurtz perused some bookshelves and saw the word on a spine. The story was swiftly finished and submitted to his high school fiction magazine which published it a month later . . . with a full page dropped in the middle of the story. It made no sense (perhaps obviously), but unfortunately no one cared. To honor the fallen status of the story (and to remember to stay humble), New Brevet was chosen as the imprint name thirty years later with the debut of War and Peace in Dodge. This has been followed by Memoirs of Jesus and Eutopia. No pages have been reported missing from the middle of any New Brevet book.

It was a fantastically bad idea trusting me with this, and that rang a clear bell with things Jesus had told me about one of his best friends. That’s what made me laugh.

Author and editor David Kurtz is a full-time data analyst at Datasite Corporation in Minneapolis, MN. An old English Major with a long history of major episodes of writer’s block, he’s learned to live with it and cope well enough. While ironic that he works all day with numbers, he believes it satisfies his analytical side, allowing his creative side to function best while writing. He is married to his best friend Beth, and they have two wonderful children together, the family being one of the most compelling stories of his life. However, neither one of the kids will tell him how to get to his voicemail on his iPhone.
