New Brevet Introduces... Elvis and Dracula?
Kenneth Starck has some stories to share!
One of the contributors to -30-: Remembering Duane Schroeder was Dr. Kenneth Starck. Shortly after the publication of -30- Dr. Starck contacted me about editing a collection of his own material, articles he had written as a journalist, personal journal entries of significant times as well as a few newly written memoir pieces. I was both flattered and excited about this opportunity, and quickly said yes.
Over the past few months, Ken and I have exchanged dozens of emails, file and photos. Ken’s writing—honed over a distinguished career—was already strong, and his idea of grouping things in four sections (Personal, People, Places and Professional) was both logical and nicely alliterative. In my role as editor (and something of a veteran self-publisher) I provided guidance and ideas to help bring the whole together (and I think I was a good sounding board, if I do say so myself).
After editing several books for my father Harold (and serving as my own de facto editor, a role I would happily abandon to the next interested party), I have found I enjoy the job. I like good books and want to see the best book possible go out the door. Few people may end up discovering New Brevet gems (though you never know where this will land), but those that do will enjoy a treat.
It’s the last week of April 2022 as I write this, and Elvis, Dracula and Other Stories of a Lifetime is in proof copy review. Publication is right around the corner. Although an interview with Elvis while playing touch football, and a tour of Romania during the First World Dracula Congress, are only two of 28 wonderful and diverse other chapters, this is a great collection. It took Ken a lifetime to compile these best and favorites, but now everyone can enjoy them.
