“No cheering in the press box!” - Duane Schroeder

Authors Randall L. Schroeder and Harold P. Kurtz have combined to bring to life a touching remembrance and tribute to Duane Schroeder, the legendary News and Sports Information Director of Wartburg College. With the help of 25 contributors who shared their own memories of Duane, Randall and Harold weave a tapestry of the everyday brilliance of the man from Loyal (WI) who was the epitome of his hometown’s name. Almost immediately upon arriving at Wartburg in 1954, Duane met Harold Kurtz. Seemingly moments after that, he started working for the college, gathering news and covering the college sports. He took the full-time role right after graduating.

Duane helped launch many careers in the news and sports media world. He pushed hard for equal coverage of women’s athletics, and he ran a tight, dedicated, professional statistics team of student workers, all who left college better prepared for life, having worked for Duane. Hosting students, faculty, and alumni at his house with his wife and partner Mary Ellen, their spreads became famous (so Randall includes Duane’s Beer Batter Bratwurst recipe in an appendix).

A thoroughly enjoyable read for all who knew Duane or have an interest in the second half of the 20th century era, and seeing how a small college prospered with the help of one its most loyal and able students-turned-worker. Available in print or Kindle versions.
